In April 1995, Wicomico County Health Department initiated a comprehensive community assessment utilizing the Assessment Protocol for Excellence in Public Health (APEX-PH) process. Through this process, the term "Unprotected Children" was coined to describe the health and psychosocial problems of children and families in Wicomico County, Maryland. A task force was formed to develop a community plan to address these issues. As a result of the ongoing efforts of this group, The Coalition for Healthy Youth was formed in 1997 to continue to improve outcomes for children and families in the community. The coalition was chosen in 1997 to represent the Healthy Start Task Force of Salisbury's Promise, Alliance for Youth (the local chapter of the President's Alliance for Youth). The Coalition is comprised of over 30 individuals who represent local business, the faith community, and public and private agencies. The coalition serves as the advisory board for teen pregnancy prevention programs, also known as the ICAPPP (Interagency Committee on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program) for Wicomico County, Maryland. This web site, AACT.net (Adults and Children Talking) is sponsored by the coalition to provide tips on "how to" communicate and as a resource for community events that encourage adults and children interaction. This project is possible due to the grant funding provided by the Governors' Council on Adolescent Pregnancy, Office of Children, Youth and Families, State of Maryland. |
